CLASSROOM TEACHER’S AIDE (Skill Set)
Program Purpose:
This program is designed to prepare highly qualified Paraprofessionals to work in the elementary and secondary classrooms. This is a 6-hour skill set as a Classroom Teacher’s Aide that will satisfy the West Virginia Department of Education’s qualifications for Teacher Aide III. Person’s who desire employment as a teacher’s aide in both elementary and early childhood classrooms will be potential students enrolling in this training as it will qualify them for promotion and pay increase as a Teacher’s Aide III. The intent of the curriculum is to provide a pathway from aide to teacher through a step process which begins with Certificates building to an Associate Degree, and then towards a Bachelor’s Degree.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the 6-hour Skill Set Certificate Program as a Teacher’s Aide, students will be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate competency in the Basic Skills including reading, writing, and mathematical computation while working with children and assisting the teaching professional in the classroom environment.
- Identify developmental stages of growth and development.
- Apply developmentally appropriate teaching strategies while working with special needs children.
- Apply and practice appropriate classroom management techniques while teaching along side a professional educator.
Opportunities:
Graduates with 6-hour Teacher Aide Certificate, will be classified as a Teacher Aide III as defined by the West Virginia Department of Education. Graduates will have the opportunity to work in a special education classroom in both the elementary and secondary levels. In addition, the graduate will be qualified to work alongside a professional educator in a Kindergarten setting. The intent of the curriculum is to provide a pathway from aide to teacher through a step process which begins with a certificate and builds to an Associate of Arts degree. A background check is required for employment in this field.
Many students continue their education towards an associate degree in Para-Education through Pierpont Community and Technical College and then, the Bachelors degree in Elementary Education at Fairmont State University, as the Para-Education Program prepares students to apply and transfer with little loss of credit.
