Welcome to the School of Health Careers
at Pierpont Community and Technical College.

Did you know that job opportunities in all health care fields will grow faster than average over the next several years as predicted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics?  In fact, the Bureau predicts that 3 million new wage and salary jobs will be generated by health care between 2006 and 2016.  This is more than any other industry.

The School of Health Careers at Pierpont Community and Technical College offers Certificate programs or Associate degree programs in a variety of health care fields, including Health Information Technology, Laboratory Assistant, Medical Laboratory Technology, Physical Therapist Assistant, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Therapy, and Veterinary Technology.  Successful completion of these programs allows graduates to begin a career after graduation or serve as a stepping stone toward a higher degree of education.  Students who enroll in our programs include recent high school graduates, established college students and workers who are leaving the workforce to return to college.

The ability to solve problems, pay attention to detail, work as a team member, be courteous to patients and work well under pressure are crucial attributes of health care professionals.  In addition, health care professionals must respect the confidential nature of medical information.  All health care jobs require the use of computers and other advanced equipment.  Health care occupations vary in the amount of patient contact and physical work that is required to perform the job.

We invite you to explore our academic programs listed below.  We recommend that students currently taking prerequisite courses in preparation for a health career, consider enrolling in the Laboratory Assistant certificate program.  Students in this program receive one year of didactic instruction and laboratory training in basic and advanced laboratory skills, technical report writing, general chemistry, basic anatomy and physiology, CPR (Basic Life Support) and safety procedures, venipuncture, and capillary puncture techniques and computer concepts and applications.  Those graduates of the Laboratory Assistant program who are admitted into one of the competitive associate degree health careers programs at Pierpont Community and Technical College will have completed 13-19 hours of credit that will be applied to their specific area of study.  You may find further information  by clicking on the Laboratory Assistant Certificate link below.
