As an EMT-I, your primary responsibility is to provide expert emergency medical care to victims of emergencies and to transport them safely to the proper facility. To accomplish this you will need to work within a team to treat patients. Most duties are performed unsupervised, in a great variety of circumstances, and often under considerable physical and emotional stress. The actions taken can mean the difference between life and death of the victim. An EMT-I has additional training that allows the practitioner to use defibrillators to restart a heart that has stopped, give fluids intravenously, and clear the airway using sophisticated techniques. An EMT-I performs advanced assessments and interventions as part of an emergency medical team to treat ill or injured patients. |
