Transfer to the airport

Day 15 - Monday, June 25 - Transfer to the airport.  Our homeward bound flight will arrive back in Washington later today.  We say good-bye to Italy, but will have fond memories of fascinating experiences while on the Roads to Appalachia through Italian Heritage 2007 for many years to come.

It was a very early start for us today. There was a little confusion with the hotel as to what time breakfast would be. We did get a bite to eat before we walked to our bus a couple of blocks from the hotel. We arrived at the airport in good time and at first it appeared that we would move along very quickly. However, many others showed up after us and limited us to one or two windows to check in. After what seemed like forever, we made our way through security and then on to our gate. We had a little time for some last minute shopping at the airport before we found out they had changed our gate. We all managed to make it to the gate with time to spare. We boarded our plane and flew into Paris without incident. The French countryside from the plane was quite impressive and I even managed to get a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower upon landing. I finally found that nail file I had been looking for for four days. They found it in Paris security. "What's this?" the security man asked me. I laughed and tried to explain how I hadn't been able to find it; he obviously didn't understand or care, and clearly he was not as amused as I was. We had plenty of time to wait for our plane, but shopping was slim pickings as we were in a temporary terminal due to new construction at the airport. They had a few sandwiches and were running out quickly with our bunch. We had a lost ticket in the group, but James saved us once again. We boarded the plane for our long flight home. We were served the best airplane food ever. Thanks Air France...the food was excellent! We landed in Washington DC just before dusk and after some confusion in Customs, we boarded yet another bus for our long trip back home. Not many stayed awake, but I did hear a few cheers as we crossed the state line back home to West Virginia. Arrivederci Italia!
