Working closely with other campus groups, Network, Servers & Security keeps Fairmont State University’s core information systems, technologies, and services running smoothly in the following key service areas.
Servers
Servers
Hardware
The data center contains approximately 120 servers, the majority of which have been virtualized on IBM Blade Center hardware, which has increased capacity and lowered power and cooling requirements. Older physical servers are virtualized when possible or moved onto a physical blade.
Software
The primary server operating systems and support programs are:
The primary server applications are:
Storage Area Network
One IBM XIV Storage Array with an 87TB capacity provides for all the data center’s storage needs.
Tape Storage
Data is backed up and archived using CommVault Enterprise back software and a Dell LTO4 tape library. Tapes are stored both on and off site depending on their retention policy.
Data Center
Data center power is provided by an UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). In the event of an external power failure, all equipment within the data center will continue to operate on battery power for a minimum of 20 minutes. Within a few minutes of an external power failure a natural gas powered generator activates automatically to provide continuous power until external power has been restored.
LAN & WAN Operations
FSU maintains two ISPs, WVNET & Time Warner, to provide a redundant connection to the outside world with a maximum through-put of 110MB. Wireless Access Points (275) located around campus provide internet connections up to & including 54Mbps while, wired connections provide 100Mbps.
Phone System
Emergency Phones located around FSU provide a direct connection to Marion County 911 and provide the dispatcher the exact location of the emergency phone. FSU’s E911 service increases the response time of emergency workers to the proper location on campus, Marion County 911 Dispatch receives the building name and room number of where the 911 call was placed.
FSU utilizes Voice Over IP through Cisco Call Manager which also provides users with voice mail. Users with analog phones can use VOIP via VG224s which convert the analog signal to a digital signal.
Two T1 lines and MetroWAN services provide VOIP & Internet services to FSU campus satellite locations.
Campus E-mail services are provided via Microsoft Exchange 2010 for faculty/staff. Student email is outsourced using the Microsoft Live@Edu serivce.
Security
Anti-Virus Efforts
FSU uses GFI’s Vipre Antivirus for its primary client workstation virus protection. Updated virus signature files are downloaded automatically every few hours. Vipre integrates directly into Outlook scanning all files and messages users send or receive. Additionally, all incoming email is scanned for viruses and spam utilizing the mail gateway services provided by WVNET.
