    Pierpont Community & Technical College President Doreen M. Larson has established a scholarship in honor of her late father. The Joseph A. Shell Power Systems Institute Scholarship will be awarded to students in the college’s new Power Systems Institute Program, which is operated in partnership with FirstEnergy Corporation.

    The bookstore on the shared main campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College now has a new name: Bound for Success.

    In the fall 2011 semester, the Bookstore Advisory Board, Student Government and the Campus Bookstore sponsored a contest to allow students to suggest names for the store, which is under the management of Follett Higher Education Group. Students submitted more than three dozen entries.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College has recognized the following students for outstanding academic achievement during the Fall 2011 semester. Those students earning a 3.4 or better grade point average have been named to the Dean’s List. Those achieving a perfect 4.0 grade point average have been named to the President’s List.

    The Pierpont School of Health Careers has launched a community service effort, spearheaded by the Pierpont Student Veterinary Technology Association: “The Cinderella Project.”


    “We want to give area high school students a night to remember,” said Sherry Grudi, faculty member in Pierpont’s Vet Tech program.


    The main focus of the outreach is to collect prom dresses and then give them away to those who may not otherwise be able to afford to participate in their high school prom.

    Debbie Benedetti, Associate Professor of English and Interim Assistant Dean of the School of Academic Studies at Pierpont Community & Technical College, will participate in a reading at the Shaw House on the shared campus of Pierpont and Fairmont State University. The reading is being hosted by FSU Interim President Maria Rose and will also feature FSU Professor of English Elizabeth Savage. The reading begins at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2011 and is open to the public.

    Pierpont and Fairmont State Students are being asked to put their thinking caps on and come up with ideas for a new bookstore name.

    The campus bookstore came under new management this summer and is looking for a new name.

    A project to bring advanced technical training to North Central West Virginia is well underway, with local, state and federal officials breaking ground for the new facility. The Advanced Technology Center (ATC) will be located in the I-79 Technology Park in Fairmont, and will have more than 57,000 square feet devoted to delivering the technical training necessary to move West Virginia’s economy forward.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College is reaching out to regional employers to learn more about what skills they need potential employees to possess. Surveys have been sent out to more than one thousand businesses in Pierpont’s 13-county service area. The survey asks large and small businesses to provide feedback about what community & technical college graduates should know and be able to do.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College continues to see increased enrollment and is once again one of the fastest growing institutions in West Virginia. At the official Fall 2011 census date, Pierpont’s headcount enrollment is 3,033, up 2.81% over Fall 2010. Full Time Equivalent (FTE) enrollment is up 3.7%.

    Global Science & Technology, Inc. (GST) is sharing its unique, state-of-the-art weather briefing system for pilots, called BriefNet™, to Pierpont Community & Technical College.  The system is being used by students and faculty at Pierpont’s Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center, located at the North Central West Virginia Regional Airport.

    A moderate earthquake has been reported centered in Virginia. A tremor was felt here in our region. According to our local 911 emergency services center, there have been no reports of any damage, but some buildings in the area have been evacuated for precautionary measures. No Pierpont or Fairmont State facilities are being evacuated at this time. The Physical Plant reports no apparent damage. There has been no disruption in utility service in our area. The Department of Public Safety will continue to monitor the situation.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College has formalized its relationship with the Tau Beta Iota (TBI) fraternity. TBI was originally chartered in 1926 at what was then Fairmont State Teacher’s College.

    “TBI was founded on the principle of support for the institution,” said Chuck Hillberry, President of the TBI Alumni Association. “We have always taken great pride in being the first fraternity in the history of Fairmont State. We can now say we are also the first in the history of Pierpont Community & Technical College.”

    Pierpont Community & Technical College is partnering with the West Virginia Chapter of the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) to offer classes leading to certification in production and inventory management.

    The first in a series of five courses, APICS’ Basics of Supply Chain Management, is a 36-hour course that will meet on twelve consecutive Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., beginning September 16, 2011. The classes will be held at Pierpont’s Center for Continuing Education at 320 Adams Street in Fairmont.

    Welcome Weekend for new students at Pierpont Community & Technical College and its partner institution Fairmont State University is getting underway. The program is designed to provide incoming freshmen with the information they need to start their college experience moving in the right direction. Classes for the fall 2011 semester begin Monday, Aug. 22.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College’s Continuing Education Department is offering a Certified Procedural Coder (CPC) certification training program in Weston, beginning August 22, 2011. The program, which can lead to employment in a variety of health care settings, is accredited through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
