    Students who have completed their work and met the requirements to earn their degrees from Pierpont Community & Technical College this academic year will be marking their achievement at Pierpont’s 2012-2013 Spring Commencement exercises, Friday, May 10, 2013.  The ceremony will be held in the Feaster Center on the shared campus of Pierpont and Fairmont State in Fairmont beginning at 6:30 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.

    Robert (Bob) Tinnell, writer, director, producer and co-owner of Allegheny Image Factory will serve as commencement speaker.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College has inducted outstanding students into the Alpha Tau Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society that recognizes the academic achievement of two-year college students.

    Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is based on superior academic achievement and is conferred only by invitation of the local chapter.

    This fall, Pierpont Community & Technical College will offer a brand new humanities course that focuses on helping students develop a global understanding of work-related issues and their personal relationship to those issues. Through the study of literary works, the class will emphasize West Virginia industries and the same or similar industries in other parts of the U.S. and around the world.

    Students can register for a new humanities course this fall.

    Thursday, March 28, 2013, Pierpont Community & Technical College is hosting its third annual Veterans 5K (formerly known as the Making Connections 5K) to raise funding and awareness for veterans’ education. On-line registration is underway at www.pierpont.edu/veterans5K and runners/walkers can also register the day of the race. Race day registration will run from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Veterans’ Square in downtown Fairmont.

    Two Pierpont Community & Technical College programs have been identified as “Exemplary” by the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation Accrediting Commission (ACFEFAC).

    Both the AAS Degree in Food Service Management – Baking and Pastry Specialization and AAS Degree in Food Service Management – Culinary Arts Specialization programs received the ranking as a result of their most recent reaccreditation visits from the ACFEFAC.

    Students enrolled in Pierpont Community & Technical College’s Power Plant Technology Program will have access to additional world-class training resources, thanks to a two-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory’s (NETL) Advanced Energy Simulation Training and Research (AVESTAR) team and the West Virginia University Research Corporation on behalf of the WVU National Research Center for Coal and Energy (NRCCE).

    Pierpont Community & Technical College is offering free training for oil and gas industry jobs through Marcellus ShaleNET, a grant program from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.

    The ShaleNET Floorhand training is a three week (120 hour) intensive course that certifies and prepares students to work on natural gas and oil rigs at the entry level in the Floorhand position.

Those students earning a 3.4 or better grade point average have been named to the Dean’s List. Those achieving a perfect 4.0 grade point average have been named to the President’s List.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College’s LPN program, based at the Braxton County Higher Education Center at Braxton County High School, will hold an informational open house for individuals interested in enrolling in the program.

    The open house will run from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19th at the Center.

    Dr. Dennis Wainstock, adjunct faculty member, will sign copies of his latest book, “The Election Year 1968: The Turning Point”, Thursday, November 15, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Bound for Success campus bookstore in the Falcon Center, Fairmont campus.

    Wainstock teaches courses in American history and government, World Civilization, and Race, Class and Gender.

    His latest book, which he dedicates to his students, follows the 1968 presidential election and the shifting political landscape of that explosive year.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College has been awarded a grant from the Community College Humanities Association to develop a new humanities literature course exploring the ramifications of globalization on career choices. The proposed course will be part of the “Advancing the Humanities: A National Endowment for the Humanities Bridging the Cultures Project” and was selected from a pool of more than seventy applications from thirty states. Only eighteen community colleges in the nation were selected to participate.
