    North Central West Virginia has a booming and vibrant aerospace industry, and regional 7th and 8th graders had the chance this week to get a hands-on introduction to aerospace education and career opportunities. More than 600 students from Harrison and Marion counties attended the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Complex Aerospace Industry Expo, held at the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center.

    Students who have completed their work and met the requirements to earn their degrees from Pierpont Community & Technical College this academic year will be marking their achievement at Pierpont’s 2012 Spring Commencement exercises, Friday, May 11, 2012.  The ceremony will be held in the Feaster Center on the shared campus of Pierpont and Fairmont State in Fairmont beginning at 6:30 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College is planning to launch an LPN program at its Braxton County center. Classes are expected to begin with the Fall 2012 semester. Prospective students interested in enrolling in the program are required to take the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills). Pierpont is offering two testing dates at its Braxton County Higher Education Center in May.

    The TEAS test will be administered at the following dates and times:

    Thursday, May 17, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
    Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College’s Pierpont Culinary Academy hosted a day-long entrepreneurial symposium for regional pastry and baking shop owners, students, and community members, Monday, April 16, 2012.


    The forum, which focused on opportunities for entrepreneurs, featured guest speakers Matt Rapposelli, Executive Chef Ohio University; Karen Guse, Wild Mountain Bakery; and representatives from the Small Busienss Development Center (SBDC) and SCORE, a nonprofit association that provides mentorship to small businesses.

    The Harvey Christie Memorial Scholarship at Pierpont Community & Technical College has reached endowed status. Pierpont and the Pierpont Foundation expressed gratitude to the major donors who made the endowment possible, Joe and Marty Rhodes, Jack and Mary Sue Fraser, Gary K. and Barbara Bennett, and Kevin and Tina Rogers. In addition, the Pierpont Foundation provided a 25% match through the Foundation’s Strengthening Institutions Phase II program.

    People interested in entry-level opportunities in the booming oil and gas industry can pursue training through Pierpont Community & Technical College.

    Pierpont is currently accepting applications for its Floorhand Training for Oil and Gas Drilling, with classes to run Monday, March 26 through Thursday, March 29, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. The training will be offered at Pierpont’s Center for Workforce Education in downtown Fairmont.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College is hosting two events on Thursday, March 22, 2012, aimed at helping student veterans. Proceeds from both events will benefit veterans’ education initiatives at Pierpont.

    Runners and walkers can now register for the Second Annual Making Connections 5K Fun Run and Two Mile Walk. The course begins and ends at Veterans’ Square in downtown Fairmont, and travels along Fairmont’s Gateway Connector. The race is once again being sponsored by Rider Pharmacy.

    West Virginia Campus Compact has selected Pierpont Community & Technical College and West Virginia Wesleyan College as partners in the College Foundation of West Virginia (CFWV) Fellows Program.  Campus Compact is an organization that provides grant and networking opportunities in order to further the community service mission of colleges and universities.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College President Doreen M. Larson has established a scholarship in honor of her late father. The Joseph A. Shell Power Systems Institute Scholarship will be awarded to students in the college’s new Power Systems Institute Program, which is operated in partnership with FirstEnergy Corporation.

    The bookstore on the shared main campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College now has a new name: Bound for Success.

    In the fall 2011 semester, the Bookstore Advisory Board, Student Government and the Campus Bookstore sponsored a contest to allow students to suggest names for the store, which is under the management of Follett Higher Education Group. Students submitted more than three dozen entries.

    Pierpont Community & Technical College has recognized the following students for outstanding academic achievement during the Fall 2011 semester. Those students earning a 3.4 or better grade point average have been named to the Dean’s List. Those achieving a perfect 4.0 grade point average have been named to the President’s List.

    The Pierpont School of Health Careers has launched a community service effort, spearheaded by the Pierpont Student Veterinary Technology Association: “The Cinderella Project.”


    “We want to give area high school students a night to remember,” said Sherry Grudi, faculty member in Pierpont’s Vet Tech program.


    The main focus of the outreach is to collect prom dresses and then give them away to those who may not otherwise be able to afford to participate in their high school prom.

    Debbie Benedetti, Associate Professor of English and Interim Assistant Dean of the School of Academic Studies at Pierpont Community & Technical College, will participate in a reading at the Shaw House on the shared campus of Pierpont and Fairmont State University. The reading is being hosted by FSU Interim President Maria Rose and will also feature FSU Professor of English Elizabeth Savage. The reading begins at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2011 and is open to the public.

    The campus bookstore came under new management this summer and is looking for a new name.

    A project to bring advanced technical training to North Central West Virginia is well underway, with local, state and federal officials breaking ground for the new facility. The Advanced Technology Center (ATC) will be located in the I-79 Technology Park in Fairmont, and will have more than 57,000 square feet devoted to delivering the technical training necessary to move West Virginia’s economy forward.
