The Pierpont Community & Technical College Board of Governors observed a moment of silence at its meeting, Tuesday, August 24th, to remember the student who died on campus over the weekend. A moment of silence was also observed earlier in the day at a student convocation.
"We grieve with the student's family and friends," said James E. Griffin, board chairman. "What a tragic thing to have happen."
The campus Department of Public Safety (DPS) has not yet released the name of the student, pending the results of an autopsy by the state medical examiner.
The student was living in Morrow Hall, a residence hall on Pierpont's shared main campus with Fairmont State University. The DPS has stated that no foul play is suspected and that there was never any danger to other students, faculty or staff.
"We have spoken with the student's family," said Sarah Hensley, Director of Public and Community Relations. "Our hearts go out to them."
Counselors from the Office of Student Affairs have been available to students, faculty and staff as they respond to the news.
The investigation is ongoing. Further details will be released as appropriate as the investigation continues.
