Pierpont Establishes Joseph A. Shell Power Systems Institute Scholarship Fund

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 - Friday, March 2, 2012

Pierpont Community & Technical College President Doreen M. Larson has established a scholarship in honor of her late father. The Joseph A. Shell Power Systems Institute Scholarship will be awarded to students in the college’s new Power Systems Institute Program, which is operated in partnership with FirstEnergy Corporation.

Shell, who passed away in 1980 from cancer, was a lifelong employee of Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company (CEI), which is now a FirstEnergy company. He worked his way up within CEI to become a Head Plant Control Operator at the Lakeshore Power Plant in Cleveland. A World War II Navy veteran, Shell had a lifelong thirst for knowledge and professional training. Larson says the scholarship will honor his commitment to providing a college education and a good career to those with limited financial means.

“CEI provided a good career for my father and enabled my family to live a quality lifestyle,” said Larson. “CEI (now FirstEnergy) was a family-oriented company. I have wonderful memories of company picnics at Euclid Beach Amusement Park and company parties with Santa. My mother still lives in our ‘all electric’ home in Mayfield Heights.”

Larson has partnered with FirstEnergy before, working with FirstEnergy’s Rick Luse to establish the first Power Systems Institute at Lakeland Community College in Ohio.

“My familiarity with power plants and power plant schedules helped me understand how to tailor courses to power plant workers,” said Larson.

Once the scholarship reaches endowed status, it will provide financial assistance to students based on need and a letter of recommendation from their PSI boot camp instructor.
