OVERVIEW OF HOMELAND SECURITY PROGRAM Program Purpose:

The Homeland Security program at Pierpont Community & Technical College provides students with a diverse orientation to the workings of the various systems and subsystems of the national Homeland Security program. This is one of the college’s most recently developed academic programs. In order to provide for students with various backgrounds and career aspirations, the program allows students to select one of four areas of concentration: a Criminal Justice track; an EMS track; a Safety track and an Aviation track. I n order to be accepted into the program, students must provide proof of US citizenship and pass a criminal background check.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon the successful completion of the Associate of Applied Science in Homeland Security, graduates will be able to do the

• Identify and understand the roles of criminal justice; EMS;Safety;and aviation concerning Homeland Security
• Identify and explain the causes of risk, vulnerabilities and threats we face presently and in the future
• Write effectively as a professional, including incident reports and conduct the appropriate studies
• Assess the effectiveness of certain Homeland Security programs when dealing with diverse populations
• Evaluate the appropriateness of certain behavior as they relate to suitability for employment in the Homeland Security profession  

Opportunities:
NOTE: A background check is required for employment in this field.

Graduates of the AAS degree in Homeland Security are eligible to compete for Homeland Security-related jobs as security managers for several worksites, including US DefenseCorporations and hospitals; as industrial risk managers; as security officers for the aviation profession; and as members of retail security management. Local, county, and state governments are career markets for Homeland Security graduates. Some Homeland Security graduates also compete for federal jobs in this security-related profession.
