Nutrition…the Next Generation (Generation III) was a three day symposium that included educators from pre-school through college, school and program administrators, coaches, school food service staff, health professionals including registered dietitians and nurses, Cooperative Extension and WIC staff and child advocates. The message was we care about the health of the next generation, our children. The focus of Next Generation III was on taking action in the schools and in the community.
This symposium built on the foundation set by Nutrition…The Next Generation I held in June of 1998. Reviewing documentation from Next Generation II, held June 18-22, 2001, will give you a flavor of the symposiums that built the framework for Generation III.
All three symposiums featured nationally recognized and local experts who shared the latest information. At all three symposiums, it was the participants who led the charge of taking action. Since many of them attended as county or school teams, there was continuing opportunity to build team strength and share resources. The format for all the symposiums was similar. The keynote speakers provided information on the major theme for the day. Workshops provided targeted information and hands-on experience. Panels and small group and small group discussions allowed time to discuss, share, personalize information, and plan for action. Participants left with newly drafted or enhanced action plans, updated resources and information, and enthusiasm.
The themes for Generations III were: Day 1 Eat Smart, Play Hard; Day 2 Build a Winning Team; and Day 3 Make a Difference. You may view or download a summary presentation of the Generation III symposium. Here is a brief summary, a flavor, of the content.
