Pierpont’s Parents’ Place

Pierpont’s Parents’ Place is one of four sections under the Office of Support Services at Pierpont.
This initiative is dedicated to supporting student-parents through free resources, guidance, and community connection.

The Pierpont’s Parents’ Place provides a wide range of free resources for student-parents. In addition, the Pierpont’s Parents’ Place Student Organization welcomes all of Pierpont’s:

  • Student-parents

  • Student-grandparents

  • Expecting student-parents

  • Student-guardians

The organization provides opportunities for peer support and helps create a more inclusive learning environment for our non-traditional students. Any Pierpont student who is raising a child is welcome to participate.

Pierpont Laboratory Preschool

At Pierpont Laboratory Preschool, we believe in the power of early learning to shape confident, curious, and compassionate individuals. Our preschool is a nurturing, inclusive environment where children are encouraged to explore, create, and connect.

We accept child care subsidies through Choices Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R), helping make high-quality early education more accessible to our community. Our program is guided by the Reggio Emilia approach, which values collaboration, creativity, and the unique potential of every child.

WV WORKS Program

WV WORKS is West Virginia’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. This federally funded initiative, operated through the Department of Human Services (DoHS) — formerly known as DHHR — helps qualifying families access financial assistance, benefits, and job training support.

At Pierpont, the WV WORKS program is coordinated through Pierpont’s Parents’ Place under the Office of Support Services. Pierpont’s DHHR Student Services Coordinator works directly with WV WORKS students to help them achieve success in higher education.

How WV WORKS Supports Students

The program coordinator provides individualized one-on-one support to each student. This personalized assistance increases student success by addressing barriers early and connecting them to resources.

Support and benefits may include:

  • Regular meetings to identify and overcome challenges

  • Referrals to Pierpont’s internal student support services

  • Community connections for legal assistance, emergency resources, and more

  • Financial assistance for training, such as:

    • Monthly stipends

    • Travel pay

    • Equipment and supply purchases through DoHS (e.g., computers, welding gear, culinary tools, etc.)

Pierpont students may qualify for the WV WORKS program if they:

  • Have children or grandchildren

  • Are expecting a child

  • Have guardianship of a child

There is an income threshold, but any parent is encouraged to screen and apply.

The full eligibility process is completed through the Department of Human Services (DoHS), but students can connect with Pierpont’s DHHR Student Services Coordinator to begin the application.

Already Receiving SNAP or Medicaid?

If you are already receiving SNAP or Medicaid benefits, you may also qualify for additional support through the WV WORKS program.
Many student-parents don’t realize they are eligible for this extra assistance — reach out to learn more!

Angel R.

Medical Laboratory Technology | First-Generation Student

I chose to attend Pierpont because it’s a great college with a wide variety of programs in my field. From the moment I got started, every staff member I’ve met has been super nice and always supportive. That support made a big difference in my decision to enroll.

The WV WORKS Program has helped me more in the past two months than I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. They helped me get into school, provided the resources I needed, and made it possible for me to earn multiple certifications—opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

I’ve always wanted to continue my education, but I never had the opportunity or the time. I was raising my son on my own and didn’t have reliable transportation. Now, with the support and resources I’ve gained, I finally have what I need to pursue my degree. My biggest motivation is my family—especially my son. I want to show him that hard work and dedication to your goals, especially education, is the key to a successful future.”
