FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Pierpont Community & Technical College proudly celebrated First-Generation College Celebration Week with a campus-wide event honoring students who are the first in their families to attend college. The “First-Gen Proud Celebration & Charcuterie,” held today at the Advanced Technology Center, brought together students, faculty, and staff to recognize the courage and determination of first-generation college students and to spotlight Pierpont’s First-Generation Student Organization.
Organized by Olivia Boltz, Director of Institutional Effectiveness and co-staff advisor, along with Skylar Thompson, Admissions and Advising Specialist and co-staff advisor for the organization, the event featured light bites, giveaways, storytelling opportunities, and information about campus resources. It was designed to build community and celebrate the unique experiences of first-generation students.

Dr. Michael Waide, Interim President of Pierpont and a first-generation college graduate, shared a personal message with attendees:
“As a first-generation college student from a steel mill community in Appalachia, I understand what it means to step into the unknown. Education opened doors for me that once felt far beyond my reach, and it continues to change the course of my life. Today, we honor those students who took that leap, who persisted, and who proved that education changes everything. You are trailblazers. Your story matters. Your success inspires.”
Olivia Boltz emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting first-generation students:
“Being first means stepping into the unknown with courage and determination. Our first-generation students embody the spirit of persistence and possibility that defines our campus community. They are pioneers who expand what’s possible for themselves, their families, and their communities. Their resilience and leadership strengthen our college and remind us that education is not only transformative — it’s generational.”

The First-Generation Student Organization is committed to fostering a supportive community for students who are the first in their families to pursue higher education. The organization works to foster a sense of belonging, provide peer mentorship, and celebrate the accomplishments of first-generation students across campus. Through programs such as the First Gen Charcuterie event and annual recognition of First-Generation Student Day, the organization highlights the strength, perseverance, and success of first-generation students while promoting awareness of their unique experiences and contributions to the college community.
Pierpont’s participation in First-Generation College Celebration Week, coordinated statewide by College for West Virginia (CFWV), reflects the college’s commitment to access, equity, and student success. Students are encouraged to share their stories using the hashtag #CelebrateFirstGen and to get involved with the organization for future events and leadership opportunities.
