Fairmont, WV – Pierpont Community & Technical College mourns the passing of Dr. Kathleen Nelson, who served as Interim President from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. Dr. Nelson led Pierpont during a critical time for the institution, bringing steady leadership, a generous spirit, and a deep commitment to student success and institutional growth.

“Dr. Nelson guided Pierpont a long way during her time as interim president,” said David Hinkle, Vice Chair of the Board of Governors, who served as Chair during her tenure. “Her leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to our college left a lasting impact. She will be deeply missed, and we are forever grateful for the progress she helped us achieve.”

During her tenure at Pierpont, Dr. Nelson helped launch several key initiatives, including the opening of the Veterinary Technology building, the Culinary Academy at Middletown Commons, and the Preschool Laboratory. She prioritized communication and collaboration by establishing the Non-Classified Staff Council and the Safety Committee to ensure employees had a voice in campus decisions. Her commitment to transparency strengthened relationships between the Board of Governors and college faculty and staff, helping guide Pierpont through a period of significant institutional change.

“Dr. Nelson joined Pierpont at a pivotal moment in our history,” said Dr. Michael Waide, Interim President of Pierpont Community & Technical College. “Her leadership helped us move forward in meaningful ways, launching new facilities, prioritizing employee engagement, and encouraging open communication across the college. Her commitment to access and opportunity was evident in the creation of reduced-rate college courses for both high school students and staff. Dr. Nelson’s legacy will not only be helping Pierpont through a time of transition but also empowering future higher education leaders at Pierpont.”

Through her thoughtful leadership, Dr. Nelson helped lay the groundwork for future leaders and a more connected, inclusive campus community. As we remember Dr. Nelson, we honor the values she lived by—trust, compassion, integrity, and respect. Her impact on Pierpont will continue to be felt for years to come.
